Trump Administration Counts 57 Officials Worth Over $100 Million
Donald Trump’s second administration has drawn an unusually large cohort of ultrawealthy business figures into public office, intensifying scrutiny of potential conflicts between private holdings and government policy. The overlap is pronounced in crypto: Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick formerly led Cantor Fitzgerald, a custodian of Tether reserves; special envoy Steve Witkoff co-founded World Liberty Financial, or WLFI; and Small Business Administration chief Kelly Loeffler previously ran digital-asset platform Bakkt.
Public Citizen said in a report released Aug. 17, 2026, that 57 Trump appointees were worth at least $100 million each, including 17 ambassadors and 40 senior executive-branch officials. Eight of the 23 Cabinet members met the threshold. The comparable totals were five under George W. Bush, three under Barack Obama and five under Joe Biden — 13 combined — putting Trump’s tally at more than four times the total for the previous three administrations.
