GnosisDAO Approves Gnosis Chain Shift to Ethereum Layer 2

1 reports · First detected 2026-08-20 · Last active 2026-08-20

Gnosis Chain currently operates as an Ethereum-compatible Layer 1 with its own validator set and consensus system, supporting payments, governance and decentralized applications. Its planned conversion into a ZK rollup would bring the network into the Ethereum Economic Zone, or EEZ, anchoring settlement and security to Ethereum while giving users and developers more direct access to the mainnet’s assets, liquidity and broader ecosystem.

GnosisDAO has approved GIP-153, authorizing Gnosis Chain’s transition from an independent Layer 1 to an Ethereum Layer 2. Under the proposal, the network will phase out its standalone validators and use zero-knowledge proofs to bundle transactions for settlement on Ethereum. The new architecture is targeted for launch in late 2026 or early 2027, though the final timing will depend on technical development and migration progress.
