DeFi Is Reshaping Latin America’s Financial Landscape

1 reports · First detected 2026-05-09 · Last active 2026-05-09

Latin America has long grappled with currency depreciation, inflation shocks and barriers to credit, while dollar deposits often offer little access to yield. Through global protocols such as Aave, DeFi allows residents to earn returns by depositing USDC, which is worth about $1 per token, or to borrow against BTC and ETH. It has therefore become a practical alternative to traditional banks.

CoinDesk published an analysis by Ripio CEO Sebastián Serrano on May 9, 2026, noting that Latin American fintech companies are offering peso- and Brazilian real-denominated stablecoins, fiat on-ramps and custodial interfaces. These services lower the barriers associated with managing private keys and wallets. Aave is also working with local companies, although the report did not disclose the companies involved or the value of the partnerships.
