Generative AI has lowered the cost of writing, translation and narration, but it has also enabled large numbers of low-quality books to reach Amazon Kindle, Audible and Apple Books. Such works often contain cobbled-together or repetitive material and factual errors. They make it harder for readers to choose books while threatening legitimate authors’ earnings, trust in platforms and order in the publishing market.

Recent reports said as many as 300,000 AI-generated “knockoff” books may be produced each month, affecting both e-book and audiobook platforms. Readers can check an author’s credentials and previous works and watch for unnatural phrasing, inconsistencies, garbled cover text or flawed depictions of hands. On platforms including Audible, they should also check whether a title is labeled as using a virtual narrator.
