Linux 7.0 Adds Three Native AI Keycodes Under Google-Led HID Specification

The Linux kernel has traditionally relied on standard keyboard input events to trigger software functions, without a unified interface for dedicated AI controls. Google led the development of the HID specification and submitted the kernel patches, allowing hardware makers to invoke context-aware AI through standardized keycodes without tying the controls to a single service provider.

The Linux 7.0 development cycle has formally incorporated three native AI keycodes for functions such as summarizing selected content, generating text and inserting it at the current position. OEMs can map the keys to Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot or other AI services according to their product designs. As of July 2026, kernel support had been fully integrated.
