Japan Plans AI-Powered Cyber Defenses for Military Systems
Japan’s government and Ministry of Defense are considering advanced artificial intelligence for active cyber defense, aiming to identify threats and accelerate responses before attacks spread. The initiative is increasingly important as radar networks, fighter aircraft and unmanned platforms become more software-dependent and interconnected, raising the risk that a single breach could disrupt command systems or operational capabilities. A zero-trust architecture would require continuous authentication instead of assuming users or devices are safe.
Under the plan, Japan’s Self-Defense Forces could begin installing protective software on radar systems, fighter jets and unmanned vehicles as early as 2027. AI would help automate the monitoring, analysis and response to cyberattacks, while zero-trust controls would continuously verify access across defense networks and equipment. The government is still studying the technology and procurement framework, and has not disclosed prospective vendors, deployment volumes or a budget for the program.
