Developer Tunes MiniCPM5 Into 657MB Local Reasoning Model

1 reports · First detected 2026-07-20 · Last active 2026-07-20

OpenBMB’s MiniCPM5-1B is a lightweight, roughly 1-billion-parameter model designed for deployment on hardware with limited computing resources. Community developer GnLOLot used reasoning traces from Claude Fable 5 for supervised fine-tuning, illustrating how outputs from a larger system can be used to improve the reasoning behavior of a much smaller model.

GnLOLot’s newly released local reasoning model is just 657MB and supports the GGUF format and llama.cpp runtime. It can operate on local hardware without an API key or cloud connection, lowering the cost and privacy barriers associated with hosted AI services. The fine-tuning approach produced stronger results in code generation and instruction following, according to the report.
