Coinbase's Base Launches MCP Tool for AI Agents to Manage Crypto Wallets and DeFi
Coinbase-incubated Base is an Ethereum Layer 2 network. Base MCP uses the MCP standard initiated by Anthropic to connect AI services such as ChatGPT and Claude with Base Account. The design brings wallet and DeFi functions into conversational interfaces, but agents do not hold private keys and users must still approve every transaction.
Base announced the launch of Base MCP on May 26, 2026, initially supporting seven services: Morpho, Moonwell, Aerodrome, Bankr, Avantis, Virtuals and Uniswap. Users can check balances, transfer funds, swap tokens and interact with DeFi applications, with a preview of asset changes shown before confirmation. The related x402 protocol processed about $1.1 million over the past 30 days.

Its official Base Batches accelerator, run by the Base Ecosystem Fund, targets early-stage companies building on the network. The latest cohort emphasizes AI agents alongside payments and trading, reflecting a broader bet that autonomous software will increasingly hold wallets, purchase services and execute financial transactions through blockchain-based rails.
Base opened applications for Base Batches 004 on Aug. 19, 2026, offering a $1 million investment pool for 10 teams. Each selected company may receive $100,000 from the Base Ecosystem Fund, subject to due diligence, as well as eight weeks of mentorship. Applications close Sept. 9, and participants will pitch investors at a Demo Day in New York. The program is seeking startups focused on AI agents, payments, trading, financing and asset issuance.
