Ripple Plans to Make XRP Ledger Quantum-Resistant by 2028
The XRP Ledger is a blockchain network supported by Ripple, while XRP is used for payments and asset transfers on the network. As quantum computing advances, existing digital signatures could eventually be cracked, threatening accounts and on-chain assets. Ripple has therefore made a quantum-resistance upgrade a key project for preserving the network’s long-term trustworthiness.
Ripple unveiled a four-phase roadmap aimed at making the XRP Ledger resistant to quantum attacks by 2028. The process covers emergency-response preparations, vulnerability assessments and the integration of post-quantum cryptography, culminating in a smooth upgrade through a network amendment. XRP rose to $1.44 as the announcement was released.

Quantum computing could eventually break the elliptic-curve signatures used to authorize blockchain transactions, putting exposed public keys and digital assets at risk. Advances in artificial intelligence and cryptographic research have added urgency to preparations for a so-called “Q-Day.” Ripple is incorporating post-quantum cryptography into the XRP Ledger’s security roadmap, while Bitcoin and Ethereum developers are also outlining migration strategies.
Ripple is preparing defenses before quantum machines become capable of threatening existing signatures, targeting a fully quantum-resistant XRP Ledger by 2028. The timetable shows major blockchains moving from theoretical risk assessment toward engineering plans, though deployment will still require testing, community agreement and phased implementation.
