Stripe Introduces Tools to Meter and Bill for AI Usage

The inference costs of generative AI services fluctuate with token volumes and the number of API calls, making it difficult for fixed monthly fees or tiered subscriptions to reflect costs accurately. Payments company Stripe has therefore added usage-based pricing to Stripe Billing, helping software companies align customer spending and product revenue more closely with underlying AI computing costs.

Stripe has introduced tools to meter and bill for AI usage, allowing businesses to charge customers in real time based on token volumes or the number of API calls and settle accounts through Stripe Billing. Reports did not disclose an official launch date, pricing or fee amounts, or identify the first customers to adopt the tools.
