Zerion Loses $100,000 in North Korean AI-Enabled Social Engineering Attack; User Funds Safe
Zerion is a decentralized, self-custodial wallet whose users control their own private keys, preventing the company from directly accessing customer assets. The incident shows how North Korean hackers are using AI to sharpen impersonation and social engineering tactics, bypass technical defenses and target employees at cryptocurrency companies.
Zerion disclosed on April 15, 2026, that a team member had been compromised in an AI-enabled social engineering attack by North Korea-linked hackers. The attackers obtained login sessions, credentials and the private key to an internal hot wallet used for testing, causing losses of about $100,000. The company said user funds were unaffected and that it had locked down its deployment infrastructure, rotated credentials and revoked the relevant access permissions.
