White House Presses Democrats on Crypto Bill Ethics Deal
The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act would create the first comprehensive U.S. federal framework for digital assets and divide oversight between the SEC and CFTC. Its Senate path now hinges on conflict-of-interest rules covering senior officials, a politically sensitive issue because President Donald Trump and his family have extensive crypto ties, including a stake in World Liberty Financial. Trump disclosed more than $1 billion in crypto-related income for 2025, intensifying Democratic demands that any market-structure bill curb officials’ personal exposure to the industry.
On July 21, a White House official said Trump had accepted what the administration called the broadest ethics provision in U.S. history, covering the president, vice president and members of Congress. Democrats had not yet received the full language and remained at odds over enforcement: they favor empowering state attorneys general, while the White House and Republicans want the U.S. attorney general to lead. Senate leaders could bring the bill to the floor as early as next week, but passage must come before the August 7 recess; the House would then need to vote again, likely in September.
