Hacked Roaring Kitty Account Posts Memecoin Contract as RKC Plunges 90% and Developer Cashes Out
Keith Gill, known as “Roaring Kitty,” rose to prominence during the 2021 GameStop retail short squeeze and became an emblematic figure in the meme-stock movement. His X account, dormant for more than 15 months, suddenly promoted the Solana memecoin Red Kitten Crew (RKC), raising suspicions that it had been hacked. The episode also highlighted the risks posed by celebrity influence, concentrated token ownership and retail investors chasing price surges.
On May 11, 2026, the account posted RKC’s ticker and contract address, then deleted the post less than an hour later. The token’s price plunged as much as 90%. Lookonchain said on May 12 that the developer used 10 wallets to invest 20 SOL, worth about $1,950, and bought 395.18 million RKC, or 39.52% of the supply. The developer then sold tokens for $611,000 and collected another $118,000 in Pump.fun fees, bringing total proceeds to $729,000 for a return of about 313 times.
