Ethereum Adds Gasless EIP-8141 to 2027 Hegotá Upgrade

Ethereum users generally need ETH to pay gas fees, creating friction for newcomers and complicating wallet design. EIP-8141, known as Frame Transactions, applies account-abstraction principles by separating authorization, fee payment and execution. That structure could let wallets or applications sponsor gas and settle charges in stablecoins, while improving the atomic execution of multi-step DeFi transactions and supporting stronger safeguards for a future migration to quantum-resistant authentication.

Ethereum core developers have added EIP-8141 to the planned Hegotá upgrade for 2027. Under the proposal, the account authorizing a transaction would no longer need to be the one paying for it, allowing a third-party wallet or application to cover network fees. If the specification clears further development and testing, users could execute onchain transactions without holding ETH, marking a significant change to Ethereum’s long-standing gas-payment model.
