MARA Holdings Launches Foundation to Address Bitcoin Quantum Threat and Bolster Network Resilience
MARA Holdings is a publicly traded US Bitcoin miner and digital infrastructure provider. As block rewards continue to halve, questions are mounting over whether transaction fees can sustain miners and Bitcoin's network security budget. Quantum computing could also pose a long-term threat to existing cryptography. The foundation will therefore focus on protocol research, open-source tools and wider adoption of self-custody to preserve Bitcoin's decentralization and resilience.
At the Bitcoin 2026 conference in Las Vegas on April 27, 2026, CEO Fred Thiel announced the creation of the MARA Foundation and pledged a $100,000 donation to a recipient selected by the community. Nearly 5,000 votes were cast, with 256 Foundation winning the ballot; MARA announced the result on April 29. The foundation will fund work on fee markets, quantum resistance, open-source development, education and policy advocacy.
