Ethereum Foundation Launches Clear Signing Standard to Combat Malicious Transactions and Phishing
Ethereum wallets often display smart-contract transactions as hexadecimal data, making it difficult for users to understand what they are authorizing and exposing them to “blind signing” risks. The Ethereum Foundation is advancing Clear Signing to translate transaction intent into plain language. Attacks involving blind signing have caused billions of dollars in losses, with Bybit’s $1.4 billion theft in 2025 serving as a warning.
The Ethereum Foundation announced the launch of Clear Signing on May 12, 2026, using the open-source ERC-7730 standard initiated by Ledger. MetaMask, Trezor and WalletConnect are already participating. Trezor plans to implement the standard by June 30, allowing users to verify the recipient, amount and permissions before signing.
