Lloyds Banking Group, University of Glasgow Launch Four-Year Agentic AI Research Programme

Agentic AI uses large language models to autonomously break down and execute multistep tasks, raising questions about software quality, efficiency and governance when deployed by banks. Lloyds Banking Group serves 28 million customers. Generative AI created about £50 million in value for the group in 2025, with more than £100 million in additional benefits forecast for 2026, giving its collaboration with the University of Glasgow significance as a test of deployment at scale.

The two parties announced the launch of the four-year programme on March 30, 2026, without disclosing its value. Each quarter, software and data engineers in Bristol, Manchester and Hyderabad will work alongside agentic AI on a range of tasks, with researchers measuring delivery speed and quality. The programme will also create one PhD position, one research master’s position and one postdoctoral position. Findings will be published regularly, and successful projects will be expanded to teams across the group.
