Autonomous AI agents can scan networks, identify software flaws and adapt attack paths with little human input, compressing cyber operations from human timelines to machine speed. The shift matters because defenders already struggle to patch exposed systems before attackers arrive. Qualys found that 46 of 52 known exploited vulnerabilities, or 88%, were attacked before customers completed remediation, while 26 were exploited as zero-days. That gap is pushing security teams toward automated detection, patching and containment.

In June 2026, researchers at the University of Toronto and other institutions said an “AI worm” built on a free model took control of about 70% of machines in a simulated corporate network within seven days on average. CrowdStrike said the average time for intruders to move laterally fell to 29 minutes in 2025 from 98 minutes in 2021, with the fastest breakout taking 27 seconds. IBM said companies using extensive AI automation contained attacks 28% faster, though control and liability questions remain unresolved.
