BitoGroup Flags Three Crypto Scams Targeting Older Investors

2 reports · First detected 2026-08-07 · Last active 2026-08-07

The expansion of virtual assets into mainstream finance has exposed older investors to increasingly sophisticated scams. BitoGroup says users aged 55 and above often fit a “high assets, long dormancy” profile, making accounts with substantial balances and limited activity attractive targets for fraud rings. The risks underscore the need for stronger safeguards as less digitally experienced consumers adopt cryptocurrency services and manage more of their wealth online.

BitoGroup returned to the Senior Health Industry Expo for a third consecutive year as the event’s only virtual-asset exhibitor. The company highlighted three major crypto-related threats targeting older users: fake credit offers, romance scams and recovery scams that exploit victims a second time. BitoGroup said it is strengthening protection through passkeys, two-factor authentication and cross-sector fraud-prevention coordination, covering account access, transaction verification and the reporting of suspicious activity.

Fraudulent cryptocurrency investment schemes often begin with contact by phone, text message or messaging app before victims are directed to fake trading platforms. Older adults face particularly high risks of financial loss because they often have larger retirement funds and long-term savings. Taiwan’s National Police Agency 165 Anti-Fraud Dashboard recorded 29,088 fake investment fraud cases in 2025, with losses exceeding NT$45.1 billion, underscoring the growing importance of coordinated defenses across exchanges and communications services.

On March 11, 2026, BitoPro and Gogolook’s Whoscall announced the initiative, combining Passkeys, 2FA, anti-phishing codes, and phone-number and website verification in a four-step program covering protection, awareness, verification and reporting. Users aged 50 or older who completed LV2 verification and made any transaction from February 22 through March 31 could receive six months of the premium version free, with redemption codes expected to be sent by April 10. A separate quiz offered Bitcoin rewards worth NT$6,000.
