IREN Shares Slide as AI Conversion Costs Mount
IREN, best known as a bitcoin miner powered largely by renewable energy, has been redirecting its electricity and data-center capacity toward artificial-intelligence cloud services. AI revenue surpassing bitcoin-mining revenue for the first time marks a significant shift in its business mix, but the transition requires heavy spending on GPUs, facilities and supporting infrastructure, raising questions about financing needs and the path to profitability.
IREN reported that AI cloud revenue exceeded bitcoin-mining revenue in its latest results, while the company posted a net loss of $684 million. Its shares fell more than 12% after the report as investors focused on mounting conversion costs and cash consumption rather than the emerging AI revenue stream. The reaction underscored concerns that rapid data-center expansion could weigh on earnings before the new capacity generates sufficient returns.

IREN, formerly known as Bitcoin miner Iris Energy, has increasingly redirected its low-cost power and data center assets toward AI cloud computing. Its acquisition of Spanish data center developer Ingenostrum, or Nostrum Group, gives the company its first foothold in Europe. Spain’s renewable energy resources, fiber connectivity and policy environment are key to its plans to expand its global AI infrastructure.
IREN announced the agreement on May 7, 2026, and completed the acquisition on June 15. The transaction value was not disclosed. Nostrum brings about 490 megawatts of secured, grid-connected power capacity in Spain, a development pipeline of more than 1 gigawatt and a team of more than 50 people spanning development, engineering, construction and operations. The business will operate under the IREN brand.
