GitHub Blames August Outage on Lagging Infrastructure Capacity

GitHub underpins software development for organizations worldwide through its code-hosting platform, automated GitHub Actions workflows and AI-powered GitHub Copilot assistant. Rapid growth in traffic and product usage raised the demands on its underlying systems, but infrastructure capacity failed to expand at the same pace. The mismatch left several major services vulnerable to a shared bottleneck and highlighted the operational risks facing a development platform operating at global scale.

GitHub said its investigation into the widespread August outage found that insufficient capacity triggered cascading disruptions affecting the website, Actions and Copilot for nearly eight hours. Retry behavior in parts of Copilot intensified demand on already strained infrastructure, worsening the incident and slowing recovery. The company plans to accelerate the migration of workloads to Microsoft Azure, improve capacity planning and strengthen isolation between systems so that failures in one service are less likely to spread across the platform.
