Rain Says 100,000 Merchants Accept Stablecoin Payments Unknowingly
Stablecoin payments are moving beyond crypto-native platforms and into mainstream commerce, often without requiring merchants to hold or identify digital assets. Payments infrastructure provider Rain connects stablecoin-funded transactions to Visa’s existing acceptance network, allowing customers to spend digital dollars while merchants receive payments through familiar card processes. The model illustrates how stablecoins could gain broad retail reach by operating behind conventional payment interfaces.
Rain Chief Executive Officer Farooq Malik said more than 100,000 merchants are already receiving stablecoin-funded payments without knowing it. The transactions are cleared through the Visa network and settled within three days, according to Malik, embedding stablecoins behind the standard card experience. Rain did not disclose the merchants involved or the total value of the payments, leaving the scale of transaction activity unverified beyond the reported merchant count.

The history behind this eventStablecoin Debit-Card Spending Grows 100% as Rain Eyes Double-Digit Latin America Market Share
Stablecoin debit cards allow cardholders to pay with crypto assets while transactions are processed through established payment networks such as Mastercard. Unlike traditional finance, where settlement can be delayed on weekends and holidays, stablecoins can accelerate the movement of funds and give issuers greater capital efficiency and financial flexibility. They have therefore become an important tool for crypto payment providers seeking a foothold in the retail market.
Crypto payments provider Rain said stablecoin debit-card retail spending is currently growing by more than 100% year on year and expects its market share in Latin America to reach double digits. Rain said instant or faster stablecoin settlement can reduce holiday-related settlement delays. The report, however, did not disclose the cutoff date for the data, the actual transaction value or the target year for the market-share projection.
