Nvidia Denies Plans for China-Specific LPU Chips
U.S. restrictions on exports of advanced artificial-intelligence chips to China have pushed semiconductor companies to redesign products for the market while staying within Washington’s rules. That backdrop has fueled scrutiny of Nvidia’s China strategy. A reported language-processing unit, or LPU, was described as a chip aimed at accelerating AI chatbot workloads, potentially offering the company another route to serve Chinese customers under export controls.
A media report said Nvidia planned limited shipments of a China-specific LPU by the end of 2026 and could also develop customized AI chips for local customers. An Nvidia spokesperson denied the report, saying the company neither sells LPU products in China nor has plans to offer them there. No shipment volume, customer names or transaction value cited in connection with the reported plan has been confirmed.
