AscendEX Shuts Down as Withdrawal Delays Deepen

The crisis began with the European Union's implementation of strict new rules under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). Cryptocurrency exchange AscendEX failed to secure authorization to operate under the regulation, while a counterparty default caused its liquidity to dry up completely. AscendEX formally ceased operations on July 1, 2026, and suspended automated withdrawals from July 6, shifting entirely to manual reviews. The exchange acknowledged that it could not guarantee processing times or withdrawal amounts. According to an investigation by on-chain sleuth ZachXBT, reserves in the exchange's publicly identified hot wallets are nearly depleted and insufficient to cover pending withdrawal requests totaling several million dollars. Users now face severe withdrawal delays and difficulties pursuing claims across borders.
