Leonidas AGV Combines Autonomous Driving and Microwaves to Counter Drone Swarms
Swarms of inexpensive drones can deplete costly air-defense missiles, prompting militaries to seek lower-cost systems capable of suppressing multiple targets at once. Leonidas uses high-power microwaves to disrupt electronic systems. Epirus supplies the weapon, Kodiak AI provides the Kodiak Driver, and General Dynamics Land Systems, or GDLS, leads integration, bringing commercial autonomous-driving technology to fixed-site and homeland defense.
On March 24, 2026, the three companies unveiled a full-scale Leonidas AGV prototype at the AUSA Global Force Symposium in Huntsville, Alabama. Mounted on a commercial Ford F-600 truck, the system can operate fully autonomously or by remote control. In an earlier test in September 2025, Epirus used a single microwave pulse to suppress 49 drones. The companies did not disclose the partnership’s value, a mass-production timetable or planned procurement volumes.
