Tech Company Owner Loses NT$40 Million in Crypto Romance Scam

A “pig-butchering” scam involves fraudsters cultivating intimacy and trust through online dating before persuading victims to transfer money for investments or joint financial plans. In this case, the victim, who runs an electronics factory, was asked to invest through an unidentified offshore cryptocurrency platform to build a “wedding fund.” The case underscores how emotional manipulation can ensnare even wealthy individuals.

Reports did not disclose when the scam occurred, which agency handled the case or the name of the offshore platform. The victim made several cryptocurrency investments as instructed, then paid additional fees in an attempt to recover the funds. The fraudster disappeared immediately after receiving the money, leaving him with cumulative losses of NT$40 million and wiping out the entire sum intended for the wedding fund.
