Google Study Finds AI Touches Jobs Covering 88% of US Employment

Generative AI’s labor-market impact depends not only on what models can theoretically do, but on how workers use them in practice. Google’s first AI & Economy ATLAS report seeks to close that gap with aggregated, de-identified activity data, offering an early measure of whether AI is primarily augmenting employees or replacing entire workflows. The findings suggest adoption is broad across the US economy, while its depth within individual jobs remains limited.

Google released ATLAS v1.0 on July 23, 2026, drawing on 14.65 million interactions recorded from April 6 to April 19 across the Gemini App, AI Mode and Gemini API. Occupations showing some AI use accounted for 88.4% of US employment, but activity centered largely on collaborative tasks such as ideation, research and writing. Fewer than 10% of interactions delivered end-to-end task automation, indicating that AI remains chiefly an assistive tool rather than a wholesale substitute for workers.
