Anthropic Reportedly in Talks to Lease Microsoft’s Maia 200 AI Chips

2 reports · First detected 2026-05-22 · Last active 2026-05-22

Anthropic needs to keep expanding its data-center computing capacity to train and run its Claude models while reducing its reliance on Nvidia GPUs. Microsoft, meanwhile, is using its in-house Maia 200 AI chip to bolster Azure’s offering and compete with Google’s TPUs and Amazon Web Services’ Trainium chips.

As of July 20, 2026, Anthropic was reportedly in talks with Microsoft to lease clusters of Maia 200 chips to help close its computing-capacity gap. Reports estimated its long-term computing-spending commitments at $330 billion, but neither company had disclosed the number of chips, the transaction value, a deployment date or a formal contract.
