Singapore Deploys Living-Neuron Data Center for Low-Power AI

Artificial intelligence’s rising electricity and cooling demands are driving interest in alternatives to conventional silicon. NUS Medicine, Singapore-based data-center operator DayOne and Melbourne startup Cortical Labs are testing “wetware” computing, in which human neurons grown from stem cells interact with silicon hardware through electrical signals. The CL1 systems are designed to learn and adapt with limited data while using far less power than standard AI servers. Researchers say the cell cultures lack the sensory structures and organization required for consciousness.

The partners showcased the Singapore prototype on Aug. 6, 2026, and announced it publicly on Aug. 17. The live research installation at the NUS Life Sciences Institute contains 20 CL1 units, forming what the group calls the world’s first independently operated biologically integrated server rack. Each unit contains about 200,000 neurons and draws roughly 30 watts, including life support. The team plans to test larger deployments and applications including drug discovery, humanoid-robot navigation, cybersecurity anomaly detection and fraud monitoring.
