Botanix to Shut Bitcoin L2 as DeFi Demand Falters

6 reports · First detected 2026-06-10 · Last active 2026-06-26

Botanix was built as a Bitcoin Layer 2 network aimed at bringing decentralized finance applications to holders of BTC. Its planned closure underscores a wider challenge for Bitcoin-focused L2 projects: converting enthusiasm for new infrastructure into sustained user activity and fee revenue, particularly as weaker market conditions force networks to prove that demand extends beyond speculative interest.

Botanix said it will shut its network after nearly four years of operations, citing weak demand for native Bitcoin DeFi and insufficient transaction-fee income. The project has instructed users to withdraw their assets by July 9, 2026. Any assets left on the network after that deadline will be cleared and will no longer be available for claims, according to the announcement.
