EMVCo Seeks Feedback on Card-Based Agentic Payments Framework

EMVCo, the global technical body behind widely used chip-card and contactless payment specifications, is turning its attention to transactions initiated by AI agents. As software increasingly searches, shops and pays on a user’s behalf, card networks and payment providers face new questions over authorization, identity, security and accountability. A common framework could help prevent fragmented approaches while allowing agentic commerce to operate across merchants, platforms and payment systems.

EMVCo has released a draft framework for card-based agentic payments and is seeking feedback from payment companies, technology providers and other industry stakeholders. The proposal is intended to provide specifications and technical guidance for secure, interoperable and scalable transactions driven by AI agents. EMVCo has not disclosed a monetary value for the initiative, while the available announcement does not specify a consultation deadline or a date for finalizing and implementing the framework.
