Routing Failure Pushes Solana Close to Losing Finality
Solana relies on proof-of-stake validators representing more than two-thirds of staked tokens to maintain transaction finality. That design makes the network resilient to individual validator failures, but Wednesday’s incident exposed a concentration risk: many operators depended on the same data-center connectivity provider. A single routing problem was therefore able to knock a large share of stake offline at once, bringing a major smart-contract blockchain close to a network-wide freeze.
On Aug. 12, a routing failure at a major data-center provider took nearly 29% of Solana’s staked tokens offline, putting the blockchain 86% of the way toward losing finality. Marinade Finance, a Solana staking platform, said the network was only about 20 million SOL short of the point at which it could no longer finalize transactions. The threshold was not breached, but the near miss highlighted how shared infrastructure can create systemic vulnerabilities across otherwise independent validators.
