U.S. House Bill Proposes Interagency Cryptocurrency Theft Task Force

Cryptocurrency theft often crosses state and national borders, forcing victims to seek help from local police and multiple federal agencies, while investigations also require onchain tracing and overseas enforcement. The FBI’s 2025 Internet Crime Report showed that Americans reported more than $11 billion in cryptocurrency-related losses in 2025, underscoring the importance of establishing a single coordination hub.

Republican Representative Lance Gooden and Democratic Representative Josh Gottheimer introduced the Federal Cryptocurrency Theft Enforcement and Coordination Act on June 11, 2026. The bill would establish a Justice Department task force chaired by the attorney general and comprising the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, Treasury Department and FinCEN. It would also require annual reports to Congress on crime trends and enforcement gaps.
