Stablecoin FX Costs Undercut Interbank Rates for First Time as Routing Emerges as New Battleground
As U.S. dollar stablecoins gain traction in emerging markets, traditional banks’ costly and slow cross-border settlement systems face a structural challenge. With leading stablecoins USDC and USDT now broadly equivalent in functionality, providers are increasingly competing on the efficiency of cross-chain liquidity routing to curb transaction friction. This evolution in payments infrastructure is lowering barriers to corporate fund transfers and marks a historic turning point at which stablecoin foreign-exchange costs have formally overtaken traditional finance.
Bernstein’s second-quarter 2026 report said stablecoin cross-border payment costs fell below interbank mid-market foreign-exchange rates for the first time, with the median parity gap at minus 3.2 basis points. A $10,000 transfer cost an average of $27 through mainstream channels, while a $1 million transaction that did not use optimal routing incurred an additional $2,330 routing tax, making cross-chain liquidity-routing optimization a key competitive focus during the quarter.
