Micron, GlobalWafers Sign 10-Year Supply Deal, Plan Next-Generation AI Wafer Research

Rapid growth in artificial intelligence, high-performance computing and data centers has fueled a surge in demand for advanced memory chips, prompting semiconductor companies to seek more resilient, locally based supply chains. GlobalWafers is currently the only silicon wafer manufacturer to receive funding under the U.S. CHIPS Act and have the capacity to produce advanced 12-inch silicon wafers in the United States. That has made it a key player in U.S. efforts to rebuild the domestic semiconductor ecosystem and secure stable supplies of critical materials.

U.S. memory-chip maker Micron Technology said in July 2026 that it would provide GlobalWafers with $500 million in strategic financing to support the development and expansion of its advanced 12-inch silicon wafer plant in Sherman, Texas. The companies also signed a long-term supply agreement spanning 10 years and plan to jointly develop next-generation wafer technologies for future artificial intelligence and high-performance computing applications.
