Consensus Experts Highlight Barriers Keeping Institutions From Perp DEXes
Perpetual-futures decentralized exchanges, or Perp DEXes, allow investors to trade derivatives tied to crypto and traditional financial assets without using centralized platforms. Institutions, however, still largely gain bitcoin exposure through ETFs and centralized exchanges. The key disconnect is that DeFi emphasizes permissionless access without identity checks, while institutions must meet KYC and regulatory-compliance obligations. Security and accountability mechanisms are therefore critical to attracting large pools of capital.
At a Consensus Miami panel on May 8, 2026, experts from Canary Labs and MN Capital said the theft of about $285 million from Drift on April 1 highlighted security vulnerabilities and KYC friction. AI agents could improve trade execution and the user experience, but the technology remains at an early stage and is not yet capable of bridging the gap between decentralized architecture and regulatory requirements.
