Chinese artificial intelligence unicorn Moonshot AI has reached a valuation of $31.5 billion, while its Kimi large language model has rapidly gained ground in the industry. The company has introduced a high-performance open-weight model that challenges the closed, proprietary approach dominated by Western giants such as OpenAI and Anthropic. The move has fueled debate in Western markets over “full-scale AI communism,” with open-source sharing potentially upending AI business models built on heavy capital investment while also raising security concerns.

Moonshot AI formally released Kimi K3, a large language model with 2.8 trillion parameters, on July 16, 2026. The company’s annual recurring revenue has reached $300 million, while the model supports a context window of 1 million tokens. Responding to open-source competition, the company has pledged to release the model’s complete weights by July 27 for free download by developers worldwide, aiming to capture market share and accelerate the development of its commercial ecosystem.
