Madou Media Announces Permanent Shutdown as AI Content Rules and Digital Platform Shift Stir Industry Debate
Madou Media was once regarded as a leading original-content brand in the Chinese-language adult entertainment market, relying primarily on in-house productions and pay-per-view revenue. But widespread piracy diverted viewers, while production costs, platform policies and changing consumer habits put its traditional business model under growing pressure. The closure has also prompted the industry to reassess adult-content rules for AI models such as OpenAI and Grok, as well as the boundaries of generative content.
Madou Media said it would permanently cease operations from April 2, without disclosing its losses or details of how the business would be wound down. Reports cited a former AV director who identified six critical weaknesses, chiefly rampant piracy and dramatic changes in the industry. Market observers expect its actresses and creators may move to subscription platforms such as OnlyFans, using personal brands, paid memberships and direct revenue sharing to continue earning income.
