Nvidia’s Taipei Hub Tests Taiwan’s Strained Power Grid
Nvidia’s decision to establish an overseas headquarters in Taipei’s Beitou-Shilin Technology Park is expected to accelerate Taiwan’s AI research, data-center and supplier ecosystem. The project matters beyond investment: AI computing requires large, dependable electricity loads, while northern Taiwan already relies heavily on power transmitted from other regions. That mismatch has turned grid capacity, regional supply imbalances and Taiwan Power Co.’s difficulty building substations into strategic constraints on the island’s next phase of AI expansion.
The latest reporting says northern Taiwan’s grid is nearing overload as planned substations around the technology park encounter local opposition. The additional demand associated with Nvidia’s arrival will therefore test whether infrastructure can keep pace with AI investment. A related survey found that about 25% of respondents still viewed nuclear power, whose contribution had fallen to zero, as a primary electricity source and underestimated the north’s dependence on cross-regional transmission, exposing a gap between public perceptions and Taiwan’s actual power constraints.
