Mozilla Tests Opt-In AI Smart Window for Firefox

Mozilla is testing Smart Window, an AI-focused browsing mode for Firefox designed to bring search, conversation and tab management into a single workspace. The feature uses technology from Exa to supply AI responses with current web information and links to original sources, addressing a central weakness of generative search: answers that can be difficult to verify. Mozilla is positioning the tool as an optional layer rather than a replacement for the conventional Firefox experience.

The latest test combines an AI assistant with natural-language access to browsing history and automated grouping of related tabs. Users can describe a previously visited page instead of recalling its exact title or address, while Smart Window can organize open material into topic-based collections. Mozilla says the mode is opt-in and will not be enabled by default, a key distinction as browser makers add AI features that can raise concerns over privacy, data handling and user control.
