Cboe Weighs Converting Bitcoin and Ether Continuous Futures Into Perpetual Contracts
Cboe’s bitcoin and ether continuous futures were originally designed with longer maturities to reduce the need for frequent contract rolls. Converting them into perpetual contracts with no expiry date would bring the products closer to those prevalent on offshore cryptocurrency exchanges and help Cboe compete for rapidly growing derivatives trading volumes.
As of July 20, 2026, Cboe was considering converting the continuous futures into perpetual contracts but had not announced a launch date, contract size or funding rate. A key development was the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s recent approval for prediction market Kalshi to offer cryptocurrency perpetual futures, establishing a path for regulated U.S. exchanges to follow.
