Microsoft Drops Internal Claude Code Licenses, Pushes GitHub Copilot CLI

Claude Code, Anthropic’s agentic software development tool, has gained favor among developers for its ability to help write, debug and manage code directly from the terminal. Microsoft also operates GitHub Copilot, and allowing employees to use a rival product in parallel not only raises licensing costs but also complicates the integration of tools, security and development workflows. The move therefore carries broader significance for Microsoft’s product strategy.

Microsoft will cancel Claude Code licenses in its Experiences and Devices division by the end of June and direct thousands of employees to use its own GitHub Copilot CLI instead. The value of the licenses has not been disclosed. The measure is not a blanket ban on Anthropic technology: employees will still be able to select Claude models through GitHub Copilot, but Microsoft’s platform will become the standardized management layer for day-to-day development tools.
