UK Assesses Economic Risks of Losing Frontier AI Access

Britain relies heavily on US developers for access to the most advanced generative AI systems, leaving businesses, public services and cybersecurity operations exposed to policy decisions in Washington. The UK’s AI sector generated about £12 billion in gross value added in 2024 and could contribute £20 billion to £90 billion by 2030, according to government estimates, making continued access to frontier models an issue of economic security as well as technological competitiveness.

The US Commerce Department ordered Anthropic on June 12, 2026, to suspend access to Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all foreign nationals, affecting British users. The UK government has now asked the AI Economics Institute, jointly established by HM Treasury and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, to urgently assess the potential effects of losing frontier-model access on productivity, labour markets and growth. No estimate of the possible economic loss or timetable for completing the review has been disclosed.
