Amazon Weighs ‘Transformer’ AI Smartphone to Bolster Digital Services
Amazon previously entered the smartphone market with the Fire Phone but withdrew after the device received a poor market response. With generative AI now transforming how users interact with devices, Amazon is again exploring mobile hardware. It hopes to use its own smartphone to connect Alexa, Prime Video, online shopping and Prime membership services while reducing its dependence on the Apple and Google ecosystems.
As of July 19, 2026, Amazon was secretly developing an AI smartphone code-named “Transformer,” with a focus on integration with the Alexa voice assistant and enhanced video and shopping experiences. Reports have not disclosed a formal product name, price, hardware specifications, investment amount or launch date. The project remains in the strategy and development stage.
