OpenAI Partners With Cybersecurity Firm on AI Security Patches for Python and Other Open-Source Projects

Core open-source infrastructure including Python, cURL and PyPI underpins a broad range of enterprise software, but maintenance teams generally lack the staffing to review all their code. OpenAI has therefore partnered with cybersecurity firm Trail of Bits to use intensive AI-powered scanning to help close security gaps across the open-source ecosystem.

OpenAI recently launched its “Patch the Planet” program, initially covering 19 open-source projects including Python, cURL and PyPI. In the program’s first week, the team used AI tools including GPT-5.5-Cyber to identify hundreds of vulnerabilities and submitted proposed patches to the affected projects.
