OpenAI Releases GPT-5.6 Prompt Optimization Guide
As generative AI becomes more widely adopted, businesses and developers are increasingly focused on communicating effectively with large language models while reducing operating costs. OpenAI’s GPT models are widely used worldwide, but overly complex system prompts often waste computing resources. The latest guidance seeks to move users away from conventional step-by-step instructions and could have a significant impact on the broader AI application-development ecosystem.
OpenAI formally released its “GPT-5.6 Prompt Optimization Guide” on July 15, 2026, saying streamlined system prompts can both improve model performance and reduce token usage by up to 66%. The guide advises developers to define desired outcomes, constraints and stopping criteria instead of prescribing specific steps, allowing the model to choose a more efficient execution path.
