xAI Has 550,000 NVIDIA GPUs but Utilization Is Just 11%, Far Below Meta and Google
Elon Musk’s xAI has rapidly expanded its AI computing capacity in recent years, reportedly deploying about 550,000 NVIDIA GPUs to train models including Grok. While GPU volume is a competitive threshold, actual performance depends more heavily on the software stack, data pipelines and cluster coordination. Low utilization means substantial hardware investment is not being fully converted into training capacity.
A recent international media report said xAI’s NVIDIA GPU utilization is currently only about 11%, well below the more than 40% levels at Meta and Google. The report did not disclose the measurement date, GPU models or procurement costs. xAI plans to ease performance bottlenecks in its large computing clusters by improving infrastructure and developing proprietary chips.
