Market Forecast Casts Doubt on OpenAI’s $100 Billion Ad Goal
OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in February 2026 as it sought to monetize the service’s vast free-user base and offset heavy computing costs. Advertising is central to its long-term financial model, but chatbots differ from search engines: users often seek advice or extended answers rather than products, while sponsored messages risk interrupting conversations or eroding trust. A shortfall would pressure OpenAI’s cash flow and increase its reliance on subscriptions and outside capital.
Axios reported on April 9 that OpenAI projected $2.5 billion in advertising revenue for 2026 and $100 billion by 2030. In a forecast released June 4, eMarketer estimated that the entire U.S. standalone chatbot advertising market would generate less than $1 billion this year and only $5.41 billion in 2030. Reports on July 14 highlighted the gulf between those figures, though eMarketer’s estimate covers the U.S. market while OpenAI’s projection is broader in scope.
