a16z Crypto Says AI Agent Business Models Could Spell the End of Traditional Internet Advertising
Since 1997, search engines, social media platforms and news websites have largely offered free content in exchange for advertising, a model built around capturing human attention. a16z Crypto says LLMs and autonomous AI agents are not distracted by banner ads or sponsored content. If machines take over purchasing decisions, the internet economy could shift from selling attention to completing transactions directly.
On March 23, 2026, Sam Ragsdale, co-founder of a16z Crypto-backed Merit Systems, warned that the global internet advertising market, valued at about $291 billion in 2025, could face disruption. ChatGPT and Gemini have already introduced in-chat checkout in the United States, while Coinbase's x402 and the MPP from Tempo and Stripe are targeting open machine payments.

The history behind this eventCoinbase Engineer Says AI Agents Could End Online Advertising and Drive Crypto Micropayments
Much of today’s online content is monetized through people visiting pages, viewing advertisements and clicking referral links. Autonomous AI agents, however, access content, APIs and digital services directly and do not view ads. Erik Reppel, head of engineering at Coinbase Developer Platform and founder of x402, believes this will disrupt the ad-supported internet economy and underscore the importance of a machine-native payment layer.
Reppel told Consensus Miami 2026 on May 6, 2026, that the agentic economy could reach $3 trillion to $5 trillion by 2030. He said stablecoin micropayments and the Coinbase-backed x402 protocol could allow AI agents to pay automatically for content, APIs and digital services within HTTP requests, gradually replacing indirect monetization models such as advertising and subscriptions.
