Trump Warns Countries Taxing U.S. Companies Digitally Could Face 100% Tariffs

Digital services taxes, or DSTs, generally tax technology platforms based on revenue generated locally. After countries including France introduced such levies, U.S. companies such as Google, Meta and Amazon became their primary targets. The U.S. government has long viewed these regimes as discriminatory against American companies and has investigated them under Section 301 of the Trade Act, making the dispute consequential for international taxation and the global trade order.

U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that any country imposing a DST on American companies would immediately face retaliatory U.S. tariffs of up to 100%, regardless of existing trade agreements. As of July 20, 2026, the White House had not announced which countries would be covered, when the measures would take effect or which goods would be targeted. The warning has nevertheless heightened concerns about a global trade war.
